Credits or Hours: 165 clock hours
Selection for the Phlebotomy program is on a first-come, first-served basis based on the completion of the requirements outlined in the Phlebotomy Application Booklet.
Note that illicit drug use, background check findings, convictions and immunization status may prevent your future employment. In addition, externship sites and employers may have regulations about drug use, criminal backgrounds and immunization status.
Indian River State College offers a number of different degrees and certificates leading to professional licensure in the state of Florida. Some professions require both a degree and the successful completion of additional criteria such as licensure exams, field placements, or clinical hours.
Completion of the Phlebotomy program requirements makes you eligible to apply to take the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)—Phlebotomy Technician exam in Florida.
If you choose to reside outside of Florida, IRSC cannot confirm whether this degree program meets educational requirements for professional licensure/certification in your state. Some states have requirements in addition to the program’s curriculum. If you wish to take the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)—Phlebotomy Technician exam in another state, contact the Board of Clinical Laboratory Personnel in the state to determine whether this degree will meet their licensure requirements.
Eligibility for the ASCP Phlebotomy Technician exam in the State of Florida also requires possession of a valid form of identification. Please visit the ASCP website to learn more.

Help Patients Get the Care They Need
Fill a critical role in the health care system as a phlebotomy technician trained to draw blood for tests, transfusions, donations or research. Your responsibilities might also include labeling, sorting and recording blood specimens; preparing blood smears; and providing comfort to patients during blood draws.
The River’s phlebotomy program includes 75 hours learning core phlebotomy concepts and 90 hours of hands-on practicum experience in laboratory and health care facilities.
Upon completion, you’ll be eligible to sit for certification exams and work as a phlebotomist in a variety of health care settings. Many phlebotomists are able to set their own schedules, making this a highly flexible career.
