Answer: You must complete a new FAFSA every academic year. The academic year begins with the Fall semester:
- 2025–2026 FAFSA: Covers Fall 2025, Spring 2026, and Summer 2026 semesters
- 2026–2027 FAFSA: Covers Fall 2026, Spring 2027, and Summer 2027 semesters
Pro Tip: Apply as early as possible after October 1st for priority consideration.
Should I complete my college admissions application first or the FAFSA first?

How can I apply and/or find more information about state scholarships such as Bright Futures?
Answer: Florida state grants and scholarships, such as the FSAG and Bright Futures, generally require applicants to be Florida residents, U.S. citizens, and submit a FAFSA annually by deadlines set by the institution. Key requirements include holding a minimum GPA (e.g., 2.75-3.0 for Bright Futures), demonstrated financial need (for grants), and full-time enrollment, though some grants allow half-time status. (FDLOE, 2026) For more information on all the Florida Scholarships and Grants, click here: Florida Student Scholarship Grant Programs page.
Pro Tip: The FAFSA should be completed at least 4 weeks prior to the start of the Fall 2026 semester to increase your chances of receiving maximum aid
Pro Tip: Bright Future Students must complete the Florida Financial Aid Application by August 31 in order to be considered for the Bright Futures Scholarship
Disclaimer: State scholarships are tentative and subject to change based on a student meeting all eligibility and renewal requirements established by the State of Florida. Students who are awarded aid and later determined to be ineligible will have their awards removed and will be responsible for covering tuition and fees through other funding sources or through self-pay. If funds have already been disbursed, the student will be responsible for repaying any resulting balance owed to the College.
Parental Information & Eligibility
Do I need my parents’ information for the FAFSA?
Whether you need to include your parent’s information on the FAFSA depends on whether you are considered a dependent or independent student. Most students under age 24 must provide parent information.
You may be considered independent on the FAFSA if you:
- Are 24 years old or older
- Are married
- Have children or other dependents you financially support
- Are a veteran or active-duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces
- Are an orphan, ward of the court, or were in foster care after age 13
- Are an emancipated minor or in a legal guardianship
- Are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness
If you cannot provide parent information due to unusual circumstances (such as a severed or unsafe relationship), contact the Financial Aid Office for guidance on possible options.
What if I am unable to provide my parents’ information on the FAFSA?
Answer: If unusual circumstances prevent you from providing parent information, contact the Financial Aid Office for assistance:
- Phone: (772) 462-7450
- Email: financialaid-info@irsc.edu
- Walk-in: Main Campus, Building W Student Services
Our staff will discuss your situation and determine if you qualify for a dependency override or other exceptions.
Do I need to include my stepparent’s income on the FAFSA?
Answer: The FAFSA application is designed to guide you through this question. Based on your specific family situation, the FAFSA will prompt you to include stepparent information if required.
General Rule: If your custodial parent is remarried as of the date you file your FAFSA, you must include your stepparent’s financial information.
FAFSA says I’m eligible, but the College says I’m not—why is there a discrepancy?
Answer: The FAFSA determines your federal eligibility for financial aid, but Indian River State College must also verify:
- Enrollment status (full-time, half-time, etc.)
- All required documentation is complete and accurate
- Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards are met
- Program eligibility for your specific degree or certificate
Even if your FAFSA shows a Student Aid Index (SAI) that qualifies you for aid, the College must confirm all institutional requirements before awarding funds.
I am a veteran of the Armed Forces. Do I qualify for benefits?
You may be eligible. The Military and Veterans Services team offers support with applications, transcripts, VA education benefits, tutoring, faculty advocacy, and connects students through the Student Veterans Organization. Students may also wish to contact the Veterans Administration Office directly at 1-800-827-1000 to see if they qualify for benefits, apply online, or refer to the Military Benefits page for information.

Answer: That’s Great! Visit our Promise page for more information.
How does the Promise Program work with Pell Grant or Bright Futures scholarships?
Answer: The Indian River State College Promise Program is a “last-dollar” scholarship that covers tuition only.
How it works:

Enrollment & Maintenance (SAP)
How many credits do I need to be enrolled in for a student loan?
Answer: To receive federal student loans, you must be enrolled at least half-time:
- Credit-hour programs: Minimum 6 credit hours per semester
- Clock-hour programs (vocational/technical): Minimum 180 clock hours per term
Note: Pell Grants and some other aid programs do not require half-time enrollment.
What is Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) at Indian River State College?
Answer: To maintain financial aid eligibility at Indian River State College, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards:
Three SAP Requirements:
- GPA Requirement: Maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA
- Completion Rate: Successfully complete at least 67% of all attempted credits (including withdrawals, incompletes, and failures)
- Maximum Timeframe: Complete your program within 150% of the published program length
Example: If your degree requires 60 credits, you have a maximum of 90 attempted credits (60 × 1.5 = 90) to complete it.
SAP is evaluated: At the end of every semester (Fall, Spring, Summer)
Will I lose financial aid if I take fewer classes or withdraw from courses?
Answer: Possibly. Dropping or withdrawing from classes can affect your financial aid in several ways:
Immediate Impact:
- Most aid requires at least half-time enrollment (6 credit hours)
- Dropping below half-time may result in aid being reduced or canceled
Long-term Impact:
- Withdrawals count as attempted but not completed credits
- This affects your 67% completion rate for SAP
- Multiple withdrawals can lead to financial aid suspension
CRITICAL: Always contact the Indian River State College Financial Aid Office BEFORE dropping or withdrawing from a class to understand how it will affect your current and future funding.
Why does Financial Aid need my transcripts from other colleges?
Answer: The Financial Aid Office must verify your transfer credits to:
- Ensure you haven’t exceeded the maximum timeframe (150% rule)
- Confirm your program eligibility for your intended degree/certificate
- Calculate your cumulative GPA and completion rate for Satisfactory Academic Progress
- Comply with federal financial aid regulations
All credits attempted at any college count toward your SAP, even if they don’t transfer to Indian River State College.
Why am I charged for housing and transportation if I live at home with my parents?
Answer: You are NOT actually being charged for housing and transportation.
What’s happening:
- These are estimated costs used to calculate your official Cost of Attendance (COA)
- The COA determines the maximum financial aid you can receive
- These estimates do not appear on your actual student bill
Cost of Attendance includes:
- Tuition and fees
- Books and supplies
- Housing and meals
