February 20, 2018 Robert Lane
Port St. Lucie resident Joe Wilson, Technical Assistant II,Main Campus, McAplin Fine Arts Center, is being recognized as the Indian River State College February Employee of the Month. Joe first joined the IRSC family in 2003 starting as a Sound Intern, before being promoted to an Instructional Aid position in 2004. Joe started full-time with IRSC in August of 2005 as Technical Assistant and is a vital member of the Performing and Visual Arts Department.
Joe’s expertise in the world of sound is second to none. His coworkers know Joe to be a man of many talents. Not only does he operate the sound equipment for the theatre, ensuring that shows, performances, and events have the best possible audio experience, he often will assist other departments on campus with technology issues, helping resolve their technical needs. In the high-pressure business of theatre, Joe’s calm and cool personality is an outstanding example of grace under pressure to both our students and co-workers. Joe is a huge supporter of the Arts at Indian River, and he is consistently going above and beyond what is required to make the Performing and Visual Arts Department and the College shine. Much of his work goes unnoticed by those in the audience and most people who come into the theatre for shows, college events and performances. Even though his outstanding gifts and hard work are usually hidden behind the scenes, each person who comes to the theatre has a greatly enhanced experience thanks to Joe’s dedication and hard work.
Joe’s co-workers best share how he positively impacts the work of the Performing and Visual Arts Department each day. A co-worker shares, “Joe is such a great example of a cool and collected personality, especially in the demanding situations that often arise in live performances and in theatre.” Another states, “We would not have the high quality level of sound in the McAlpin without Joe’s expertise, it enhances the audience’s experience in a way they are rarely aware.” Finally one co-worker explains, “Joe is always working dutifully behind the scenes for our shows and College events, always making sure that sound levels are correct and that our equipment is running at its best. His dedication and commitment to the Arts and IRSC is an indispensable part of our program.”
