Indian River State College is recognizing Port St. Lucie resident Dr. Tammy Powley, Professor,
English/Communications/Modern Languages Department, as the April 2018 Faculty Member of the Month. Dr. Powley joined the IRSC faculty
in January 2008 as a Professor in the English/Communications/Modern Languages Department,
where she serves today.
Tammy’s colleagues know her as a genuine advocate for student success in class, as well as in life, encouraging students to both think critically and engage in their local community.
Teaching Technical Communications and English Composition I and II, Tammy enjoys offering students alternatives for critical thinking that are both appropriate for a workplace and the academic environment. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Tammy diligently works as the Quality Matters (QM) designer for the English Composition II (ENC 1102) course and teaches a variety of online classes — often designing them herself. Tammy led the creative writing online initiative for the last two years, successfully growing it into a well-established creative writing class.
Tammy generously gives of her time to the community, sponsoring and working with the Caring through Crafting Club, which makes blankets, stuffed animals, and other crafts for charities like Save the Chimps, Domino’s House, and Dogs and Cats Forever.
Tammy earned her Masters of Art in Literature and Ph.D. in Texts and Technology from the University of Central Florida coinciding with some of her research interests that include 19th century literature, domestic technology, digital media, and Southern literature. She is a published author with several books including Women of Florida Fiction published in 2015 by McFarland.
Tammy’s students eagerly share how much they enjoy her teaching, with one saying, “She always lends a helping hand and encourages students to push through and challenge themselves.” Another student says, “Dr. Powley is firm, but fair with a rigid lesson plan and a drive to ensure that students learn.” Lastly, one of her students states how Tammy is an outstanding example of community action to her students, “Dr. Powley has a heart of gold! She gives back to the community while encouraging community engagement from her students.”
