This program combines the general education foundation of an Associate in Science degree with the 53 credits required by the National EMS Education Standards in State of Florida statutes and administrative code for emergency medical technicians and paramedics.
The Indian River State College EMS Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professional (CoAEMSP).
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Admissions requirements for the EMT program are outlined in the EMT application book. You must be able to pass a physical exam, be up to date on your immunizations and be tested for Tiberculin (tuberculosis).

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) enjoy fast-paced careers responding to emergency calls and helping to save lives. They assess injuries, administer emergency medical care and transport the sick or injured to medical facilities.
You will learn the skills you need to start a career as an emergency medical technician, public safety telecommunicator or ambulance driver. Your courses will include classroom instruction, hands-on skills labs, clinical rotations and field internship experiences.
Paramedic

As a paramedic, you will be responsible for administering advanced life support care for sick or injured people before they can get to the hospital.
You’ll learn how to assess a patient’s illness or injury and then prioritize their medical treatment—all with the goal of improving their chances of surviving and recovering from an emergency. Your courses will include classroom instruction along with clinical and field experiences.
