Drama: Hedda Gabler

Ibsen’s great social drama explores the tormented desire for escape by a caged woman in the late nineteenth century as she yearns for individual and spiritual freedom. Hedda Gabler, daughter of an aristocratic general, has just returned to her villa in Kristiania (now Oslo) from her honeymoon. Her husband, Jørgen Tesman, is an aspiring, young and reliable (but not brilliant) academic who has combined research with their honeymoon. As the drama unfolds, it becomes clear Hedda never loved him, but married him to escape the boring life to which society condemned her.
