IRSC Hosts Inaugural 9/11 Stair Climb at Public Safety Training Complex

September 11, 2022 Robert Lane

On Sunday, September 11, Indian River State College (IRSC) hosted the Inaugural 9/11 Stair Climb and 2-Mile Walk/Run at the IRSC Treasure Coast Public Safety Training Complex (TCPSTC). The College partnered with the St. Lucie County Fire District, HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, and Play Treasure Coast Sports to honor the victims of September 11 and allow participants to reflect on the importance of commemorating the events and heroism of that day 21 years ago.

Thirty participants—including St. Lucie County Firefighter Challenge Team members in full bunker gear—climbed 110 flights of stairs at TCPSTC (equal to 2,200 steps), symbolic of the heroic ascent of firefighters responding at the World Trade Center that fateful day in 2001. Additionally, during the climb, a 2-mile walk/run took place. The length of the run is equivalent to climbing 110 flights of stairs.

Proceeds from the day’s event went to the St. Lucie County Hundred Club, which provides direct financial support to spouses and dependents of law enforcement officers and firefighters who have lost their lives or been disabled in the line of duty.

Thank you to all those who came out to participate and commemorate Patriot Day at the inaugural 9/11 Stair Climb and 2-Mile Walk/Run.
