The Indian River State College (IRSC) Pharmacy Technician program is now accepting applications for the spring 2021 semester. Pharmacy Technician program graduates are ready for the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam and to seek employment in a retail pharmacy, hospital or nursing facility.
Pharmacy technicians enjoy rewarding careers as vital members of the healthcare team. The demand for Pharmacy Technicians in our region is expected to grow significantly by 2027 (ESMI). The average starting pay for trained Pharmacy Technicians is $14 per hour with the potential to make up to $25.
“Our Pharmacy Technician program features two mock environments—a retail pharmacy and a hospital pharmacy,” explains Michelle Cuba, IRSC Health Science Program Coordinator. “Students learn hands on what it is like to work in both settings, from preparing to be an IV technician in the hospital to counting and separating medication for patients picking up their prescription at a retail pharmacy.”
The Pharmacy Technician certification includes classroom and laboratory instruction, and a 14-week internship (7 weeks in retail, 7 weeks in hospital). Once students complete the 1,050 clock-hour program, they are eligible for a state license to practice in Florida and have the opportunity to sit for the national licensing exam.
Those interested in applying to the Pharmacy Technician Program must do so by December 7, 2020. Classes begin in January, and there are only a limited number of seats available.
