Indian River State College recognizes Fort Pierce resident Camila Alvarez as the October Faculty Member of the Month. Camila became a part of the IRSC family in March 2003 working as an Advisor in Minority Affairs and as an Adjunct Instructor. She joined IRSC faculty full-time, and she now serves as an Associate Professor in the English/Communications/Modern Languages Department.
Known for an intense commitment to student success, Camila teaches literature courses and composition courses—including ENC 1101 and ENC 1102. Students in her composition courses often find themselves working on websites and using technology to enhance their learning experience. She is extremely student focused and is always willing to try new teaching methods to improve student success.
Camila earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Florida and her Master’s Degree in English from Florida Atlantic University—where she focused on 19th century British and American literature. Her literary interests include authors Henry James, Mark Twain, Edgar Allan Poe, and Jonathan Swift. She is currently working on her Doctorate in Text and Technology at the University of Central Florida.
Camila has more than 15 years of teaching experience. In addition to her role as an instructor, Camila chaired the English and Modern Languages department until last year—relinquishing the role to focus on her doctorate. She has also served as a presenter for Education Talent Search on learning styles, writing college essays, and writing scholarship essays.
Camila’s students gladly share how her commitment to their success impacts them. “Professor Alvarez is an excellent teacher, always attentive to each student, making sure we really understand the concepts of the class. She always shows a lot of interest in her students.” Another says, “She is extremely caring and has a passion for what she does. You can tell she knows a lot about English/Literature.” They continue sharing, “Professor Alvarez gives amazing feedback and does a great job listening to her class.” Finally, another student adds, “Professor Alvarez is truly outstanding—one of the best instructors I have ever had.”
