Doug Wilberscheid Named November 2018 Faculty Member of the Month

November 27, 2018 Robert Lane

Indian River State College is recognizing Fort Pierce resident Associate Professor Douglass Wilberscheid as the November Faculty Member of the Month. Doug joined the IRSC faculty starting a Master instructor in August of 1990. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in August 2005, and in August 2012 he earned his promotion to Associate Professor, the title he holds today serving as part of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences faculty.

Ask Doug’s colleagues in the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Division about his commitment to teaching, and they will talk about an instructor who has consistently maintained his dedication to students. On a daily basis Doug works with students in his office or the common area outside the faculty offices on Main Campus. He regularly stays after class to answer student questions. Doug was one the very first faculty members to teach in the QEP action research project. His insights into the curriculum, IRSC students, and innovative ideas have been instrumental in the changes and success of the various delivery methods of MAT 1033 Intermediate Algebra. Doug goes the extra mile when it comes to his students. In one exercise to get students to participate in his calculus classes, he runs an engaging session called “Math Jeopardy.” This particular session directly challenges the students and encourages them to work and study harder.

Doug also supervises the Math Lab for the College. Math Lab tutors are for students in need of help in our upper-level math classes. Doug does an excellent job looking for tutors that are most helpful to our students. Additionally, he has worked on an N.S.F. grant with Dr. Frank Ward developing graphing calculator materials.

Doug’s student love to talk about his impact on their achievement pursuing their academic goals. One of Doug’s students shares, “Professor Wilberscheid always gives many opportunities to succeed in his class.” They continue, “He is very supportive, positive, and caring to all of his students!” Another students relates how Doug is accessible to assist students outside of class saying, “If you go see him during his office hours, he will stop everything to help you and will be very patient as he helps you understand the work.” Finally, a student conclusively states, “He is the greatest math teacher—he made statistics look easy!”
