Indian River State College recognizes Port St. Lucie resident Mia Tignor as the January Faculty Member of the Month. Mia joined the IRSC family in December 2012 as a Librarian/Instructor and earned a promotion to Assistant Professor in August 2018.
In addition to her work as part of the IRSC Libraries team on Main Campus, Mia teaches an average of 700 students each semester with a focus on non-credit library instruction to introduce them to information literacy skills, database searches, and other vital aids to student learning. Mia also teaches credit classes and maintains learning outcomes at 86%; she holds a 97% approval rating in her non-credit instruction courses.
Mia works with students in American History—Reconstruction to the Present (AMH 2020) on a digital archives project where students gain hands-on experience selecting, describing, and digitizing historical materials for incorporation into the IRSC digital collection. Mia was instrumental securing a permanent loan of the TCPalm newspaper archives which dates back to 1901. Housing this one-of-a-kind resource positions IRSC Libraries as the nexus for historical research on the Treasure Coast. Mia is also a current Ph.D. candidate, Text & Technology, at the University of Central Florida.
Mia supports a variety of student, faculty, and staff groups around campus, providing presentations and tabling at events. She works closely with the librarians to tailor sessions for student and faculty needs. Mia currently serves as Co-Chair of the Online Teaching and Learning PLC and is part of the Focus Group Workgroup and the Virtual Campus Workgroup. She additionally serves as secretary of the Florida Digital Humanities Consortium Executive Committee, a group of institutions in Florida that seeks to promote an understanding of the humanities in light of digital technologies and research. IRSC is the only College member of this organization.
The students that Mia assists daily in the Library and who enroll in her classes enthusiastically share how she champions student success and engagement. “I feel more comfortable utilizing the resources offered through the College because of Professor Tignor,” shares one student. Another students says, “Professor Tignor involves us in ways that help ensure we really ‘get’ the material presented to us.” Finally one student adds, “Mia is awesome! She is a very good teacher who takes the time so we understand and are still engaged. She answers every question thoroughly.”
