Indian River State College recognizes Port St. Lucie resident Dr. Patricia Corey-Souza as the September Faculty Member of the Month. Joining the IRSC faculty in August 1994, Patti earned a promotion to Associate Professor in August 2005.
Patti is a registered nurse with over 35 years of experience, and is integrally involved with curriculum development and teaching in the areas of wellness, personal safety, health information technology, and healthcare management. She is a detailed-oriented professional who is passionate about student success, and seats in her classes are highly sought after by students. Patti’s philosophy is that every student has a unique style of learning involving collaboration, cooperation, and compassion. She believes in order to be truly successful, each student needs to recognize potential barriers to learning and the resources available to them to achieve their goals.
In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Patti leads health services for IRSC students and employees through the Health and Wellness Center. In this role, Patti’s focus is on providing a comprehensive approach to good health and well-being to help both students and employees engage in numerous areas of lifestyle improvement. The center further supports student success with test-anxiety assessments and strategies to overcome challenging testing practices.
Patti is a member of the National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA), American College Health Association, and IRSC Nursing Honor Society. She currently serves the chairperson of the Inner Truth Project Advisory Board and a member of the Mental Health Collaborative of Indian River County.
Patti’s students eagerly share how her heartfelt concern for her students’ success and well-being has a positive impact on their time at IRSC. One student shares, “Dr. Corey emails in a timely manner, keeps you updated on assignments, and answers your questions in the best way possible.” Another student states, “Dr. Corey has an open door policy. She is genuine, caring, and committed to student success.” Another student relates how much they enjoyed their studies in Patti’s classes saying, “I wish Dr. Corey taught more classes so I could take her again!”
