FORT PIERCE, FL (December 12, 2024) -
In a powerful testament to perseverance and the transformative impact of education, Indian River State College announces that Kendy Campusano, a successful registered nurse and immigrant from the Dominican Republic, will deliver the keynote address at the Indian River State CollegeBachelor's Degree Commencement Ceremony on December 17, 2024.

Campusano's journey with Indian River State College began in 2006 when she enrolled in General Educational Development (GED) classes after immigrating to the United States. Through dedication and hard work, she progressed from English as a Second Language courses to becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), and ultimately earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)—all while maintaining her roles as a wife and mother of two.

"Kendy Campusano's story embodies everything we strive for at Indian River State College," said Dr. Timothy Moore, Indian River State College President. "Her progression from GED student to BSN graduate and, now, commencement speaker demonstrates the life-changing power of education and the importance of perseverance."

Currently employed at Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital, Campusano completed her education debt-free thanks to scholarships made possible by the Indian River State College Foundation. Her commitment to healthcare extends beyond her daily duties, as she serves on the hospital's storm response team. She plans to establish a scholarship foundation with fellow nursing alumni to support future healthcare professionals.

“I am excited to share my story,” said Campusano. “As an adult learner, it was challenging. I never gave up, because Indian River State College always gave me hope, and I kept continuing until I got it done.  Now, I am a successful student giving back to my community as a registered nurse at a local hospital. It’s a good feeling.”

Campusano's family reflects her dedication to education. Her husband is an Indian River State College graduate. Her son is pursuing higher education while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in Okinawa, Japan, and her daughter is currently enrolled in Indian River State College’s dual enrollment program.

The Fall 2024 Commencement will celebrate over 2,000 graduates receiving technical certificates, associate degrees, and bachelor's degrees. Campusano will address bachelor's degree candidates during the 9:00 a.m. ceremony on Tuesday, December 17, at the Westside Center.
