In today’s rapidly changing world, emergency preparedness is essential. RiverAlert serves as your lifeline during campus emergencies, delivering critical information when seconds matter most.

Using Everbridge technology, our comprehensive notification system provides timely alerts to our college community through multiple communication channels, providing the information you need to stay safe during emergencies.

All active students, faculty and staff are automatically enrolled in the RiverAlert emergency notification system.

Verify that your contact information is current.

Employees: Visit irsc.okta.com
Students: Visit go.irsc.edu

Log in to Workday through MyPioneerPortal, then:

1. Choose View Profile.
2. Click Contact.
3. Select Edit.
4. Update your mobile number and email address.
5. Select Submit.

Also:

• Ensure your cell phone settings allow emergency alerts from Indian River State College.
• If your phone is on the National Do Not Call List, you must opt in by texting RiverAlert to 888777.
• When you receive an emergency notification, confirm receipt by following the prompts to avoid receiving repetitive alerts for that event.

Emergency Response Terms

These are standardized protocols that guide actions during critical situations. Everyone should learn these terms to protect themselves and others in emergencies.

Lockdown

Protecting individuals from harm by reducing their visibility and vulnerability to an active assailant. The goal is to “lock down” our facilities.

• Threat is ON campus and/or INSIDE a building.
• Time permitting, lock all exterior doors.
• Find a safe room with few or no windows and doors that can be locked from the inside and/or barricaded.
• Stay out of sight.
• Move away from sight, turn off the lights, maintain silence, silence cell phones and stay away from windows.
• Do not open the door for anyone.
• If not already on campus, avoid the area until the “All Clear” is given.
• Wait for the official “All Clear.”

Lockout

Preparing for a perceived threat or hazard off campus or outside of a building, such as police activity involving a dangerous event or a hazardous situation nearby. The goal is to “lock out” a potential threat.

• Threat is OFF campus and/or OUTSIDE a building.
• Get inside and lock exterior doors.
• Classes continue as normal indoors.
• Maintain increased situational awareness.
• No outside activities and no entry into buildings are permitted.
• If not already on campus, avoid the area until the “All Clear” is given.
• Wait for official instructions.

Evacuate

• Exit the building using designated routes.
• Leave belongings behind.
• Follow instructions from authorities.
• Proceed to assembly areas.
• Report to designated personnel.

Shelter in Place

• Stay where you are.
• Close doors and windows, if instructed.
• May be used for severe weather or hazardous materials.
• Wait for official instructions.

BOLO (Be on the Look Out)

• Stay alert for suspicious persons or activity.
• Report concerns immediately.
• Select Edit.
• Do not approach suspicious individuals.
• Provide detailed descriptions to authorities.
