Indian River State College Foundation Named Presenting Sponsor of Red, White & YOU Charity Golf Tournament
FORT PIERCE, FL (December 4, 2025) – The Indian River State College Foundation (IRSC Foundation) will serve as Presenting Sponsor for the Red, White & YOU Charity Golf Tournament at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie on Dec. 7, 2025, strengthening the connection between veteran education and rehabilitation programs on the Treasure Coast.
Tournament proceeds benefit PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere), the flagship military program of PGA REACH, which uses golf to support veterans’ mental, social, physical, and emotional well-being. The sponsorship aligns with Indian River State College’s role as a Military Friendly School serving over 400 student veterans annually through specialized academic advising, career services, and transition support.
“Supporting veterans requires meeting them where they are—whether that’s in the classroom, on the golf course, or preparing for their next career,” said Annabel Robertson, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at the Indian River State College Foundation. “This partnership with PGA Golf Club, in support of PGA HOPE, allows us to serve the whole veteran, not just their academic journey.”

The golf tournament, which is sold out, starts at 9:00 a.m. with opening ceremonies, and concludes with a post-event celebration. Participants, guests, and the general public can donate to the event by bidding on the AmFund “Trip of a Lifetime Auction”. Bidding opens at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2025.
Owned and operated by the PGA of America, PGA Golf Club is home to three highly decorated courses designed by renowned architects Tom Fazio and Pete Dye. The Dye Course ranked 15th in Golfweek’s 2025 Best: State-by-State Courses You Can Play rankings, while the Wanamaker Course ranked 19th, making PGA Golf Club one of only a handful of properties with two layouts on the respected list.
“PGA Golf Club and the PGA of America are committed to improving the lives of our nation’s Veterans and their families through the game of golf,” says PGA Golf Club General Manager Jeremy Wiernasz. “My father served in the military, so this event really hits home, as it is something our members and I are passionate about. Since the inception of this program, a decade ago, we have hosted over 200 golf functions including Clinics and HOPE League, impacting nearly 250 veterans. Events like Red, White & YOU significantly help PGA HOPE and its unique programs”.
The Foundation views the tournament as part of its commitment to supporting the College’s military and veteran services programs. Participants are encouraged to continue their support at the IRSC Foundation Charity Clay Shoot at the OK Corral in Okeechobee on Feb. 13, 2026. The Clay Shoot directly funds veteran scholarships and emergency assistance for military-connected students.

Indian River State College, Port Saint Lucie Community Band to Present Holiday Concert Series
FORT PIERCE, Fla. (December 3, 2025) — Indian River State College (The River) music students will collaborate with the Port Saint Lucie Community Band for “Sounds of the Season,” a holiday instrumental concert series running Dec. 4-7, 2025.
Directed by Dr. John K. Southall, the performances feature classical seasonal favorites and contemporary arrangements of traditional holiday melodies. The collaboration provides performance opportunities for The River’s music students while delivering seasonal entertainment to Florida’s Treasure Coast region.

Tuition Discount Now Offered for Indian River State College Community Pursuing Graduate Education
FORT PIERCE, Fla. (December 3, 2025)  – Indian River State College (The River) and Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) today announced a new educational partnership designed to support the academic advancement of students and employees of The River.
Under the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions, SNHU will provide a 10% tuition discount to Indian River State College employees and students enrolling in graduate programs. The partnership reflects both institutions’ commitment to expanding access to affordable higher education and supporting lifelong learning.
“This partnership with Southern New Hampshire University opens new doors for our students and employees who aspire to advance their education,” said Dr. Timothy E. Indian River State College Foundation Hosts Helicopter Ball Drop Fundraiser to Support Student-Athletes
FORT PIERCE, FL (November 21, 2025) – The Indian River State College Foundation will host a Ball Drop fundraiser on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Hammock Creek Golf Club in Palm City. The exciting event will feature hundreds of numbered golf balls dropped from a helicopter onto the driving range, with $20,000 in total cash prizes up for grabs.
The ball that lands closest to the pin will win the grand prize of $10,000, while the next 10 closest balls will each win $1,000. All cash prizes are generously funded by a private donor, and 100% of donation proceeds will directly benefit the Indian River State College (The River) Athletic Department.
“This event represents the perfect combination of community excitement and meaningful support for our student-athletes,” said Scott Kimmelman, Athletic Director at Indian River State College. “Every dollar raised helps us provide our athletes with the resources they need to excel both on the field and in the classroom. We’re grateful to our community for rallying behind our student-athletes year after year.”
The River’s Athletics Department is dedicated to athletic and academic excellence while developing student-athletes through integrity, sportsmanship, and community engagement. Funds raised through the Ball Drop will support scholarships, equipment, facilities, and programs that help student-athletes succeed.

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (November 21, 2025) — Indian River State College (The River) celebrated exceptional dedication and achievement at its 2025 Service Awards Reception, recognizing individuals and teams whose contributions have significantly advanced The River’s strategic priorities and mission.
Strategic Goal and Special Award Recipients
Thomas Lewis received recognition for Meritorious Service for improving student success. Gracia Buzziz was honored for Meritorious Service for increasing college-going in the community. The college’s Canvas Implementation Team of Jessica Bajarano, Molly Goyette, Stephen Hayden, Elizabeth Jefferson, April Litton, and Veronica Mena received recognition for Meritorious Service for promoting continuous improvement to enhance organizational performance.

Indian River State College Leaders Receive Prestigious FCSAA Honors
FORT PIERCE, FL (November 19, 2025) — Indian River State College (The River) is proud to announce significant recognitions from the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) honoring two distinguished leaders who have made exceptional contributions to the college and Florida’s collegiate athletics community.

Scott Kimmelman, Indian River State College Athletics Director, has been elected to the prestigious FCSAA Hall of Fame, while Alex Kanter, Associate Dean and Director of Theatre and Dance, has been recognized for his service on the FCSAA Executive Committee for 2024-2025. The honors were presented by Rob Chaney, Associate Director and Athletics Commissioner at The River’s November Meeting of the Board of Trustees.

A Legacy of Championship Excellence

Kimmelman has been a part of the College’s Athletics Department since October 1993, beginning as an Assistant Coach for The River’s legendary swimming and diving program. After being promoted to head coach in June 2002, he guided both the men’s and women’s teams to NJCAA National Championships in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006—contributing to what is now a record-breaking 51 consecutive championships for the men and 43 in a row for the women. In June 2006, Kimmelman was promoted to Director of Athletics, a position he continues to hold with distinction. Under his leadership, all of The River’s sports have flourished, including the softball team’s NJCAA World Series title in 2024. His coaching career boasts 26 National Championships, with 40 more earned as an administrator, and his accolades include NJCAA Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year (2003, 2004, 2005), NJCAA Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year (2006), induction into the NJCAA Swimming & Diving Hall of Fame (2011), and the NJCAA Jack Cistriano Service Award (2012).

“It is a tremendous honor to be inducted into the FCSAA Hall of Fame,” said Kimmelman. “Ironically, this recognition I am receiving represents the accomplishments of the athletes and coaches with whom I have worked over my more than three decades at the college. I have never swum a stroke, performed a dive, thrown a ball, stolen a base, or made a free throw. I have simply provided athletes with opportunities to further themselves both academically and athletically.”

Beyond Indian River State College, Kimmelman has served as Chair of the Southern Conference and on the Council for Athletic Affairs’ Executive Board. He led the start-up of the Citrus Conference as the Chair during its inaugural year. He has also been a member of the Board of Directors for both Florida Swimming and the Treasure Coast Sports Commission for more than 20 years. Overseeing one of the nation’s premier facilities, he has hosted and administered more than 15 NJCAA Swimming & Diving National Championships and partnered with Treasure Coast Sports to host both the FCSAA Softball Championship at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach from 2015-17 and the 2025 Division II Volleyball State Championship.

Leadership at the State Level

Alex Kanter was recognized for his service to the FCSAA Executive Committee, which serves as the chief administrative body of the FCSAA, overseeing day-to-day operations and implementing policies necessary for the Association’s success.

“Serving on the FCSAA Executive Committee has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career,” said Kanter. “The FCSAA recognizes, celebrates, and validates all of the incredible opportunities available to Florida post-secondary students beyond just the classroom and the computer screens that make College such a transformational experience. Helping theatre departments at each of our state colleges promote their students’ passion and accomplishments onstage and off has truly been an honor.”

These honors are well-deserved recognition of their outstanding contributions to our students and our institution.”

The FCSAA Hall of Fame comprises administrators, coaches, advisors, officials, students, and other nominees who have contributed a minimum of 10 years to FCSAA or one of its member institutions. Inductees are selected by their peers based on their community and state college contributions, achievements, and significant accomplishments.

The Florida College System Activities Association serves as the governing body for intercollegiate athletics and activities across Florida’s 28 public colleges. The FCSAA Executive Committee, with the FCSAA President as presiding officer, is empowered by the Presidents Assembly to initiate policies and implement practices necessary for the Association’s operation.

The Board of Trustees joined President Moore in congratulating Scott Kimmelman and Alex Kanter on these distinguished achievements.

Future Chefs Turn Up the Flavor at Sunshine Kitchen Showdown
FORT PIERCE, Fla. (Nov. 13, 2025) – Nimsi R. Moreno from Fort Pierce Westwood Academy and Christina Theriault from Indian River State College (“The River”) Culinary Institute took home top honors at the 5th Annual Sunshine Kitchen Cookoff, each earning a $1,500 scholarship for their winning dish.
The competition, held at the Sunshine Kitchen in Fort Pierce, paired Indian River State College Culinary Institute students with St. Lucie County Public Schools students. Teams competed in front of judges in categories including plate appearance, taste, teamwork, cooking technique, knife skills, difficulty, and food safety.
The winning team impressed the judges with “It’s the Best Thing We Have Ever Tasted—with a French Twist,” featuring a four-cheese grilled cheese with balsamic glazed onions, candied bacon, apple, and candied pork loin on grilled French bread, garnished with a candied bacon sail, paired with macaroni and cheese topped with chives, candied bacon, and crispy onion slivers. The dish stood out for its balanced flavors, precise technique, and eye-catching presentation. Judges highlighted the team’s ability to manage complex steps under pressure while working seamlessly together, making their entry a clear favorite.
“Competitions like this are the classroom in action. You can see the growth in every plate — technical skill, imagination, and pride in their craft,” said Debbie Midkiff, Department Chair and Instructor for Culinary and Hospitality Programs at The River.
This year’s cookoff featured five teams, each challenged to create grilled cheese sandwiches and macaroni and cheese dishes incorporating pork loin, showcasing both culinary technique and creativity under tight time constraints. Judges noted the impressive range of flavors and presentations, underscoring the talent and potential of the student competitors.

Indian River State College Awarded $3.25 Million Federal Grant to Address Florida’s Nursing Shortage
HRSA Nurse Education Grant Funds Project NURSe to Expand Nursing Program Enrollment in Rural and Medically Underserved Communities
FORT PIERCE, Fla. (Nov. 13, 2025)—Indian River State College (“The River”) has been awarded a four-year, $3.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) through the Nurse Education, Practice, Quality and Retention (NEPQR) – Workforce Expansion Program (WEP). The federal investment will enable The River’s School of Nursing to significantly increase enrollment in its Associate Degree nursing (ADN) program through Project NURSe (Nursing Workforce Expansion), preparing more practice-ready registered nurses to serve the Treasure Coast region’s rural and medically underserved communities.
Florida Nursing Shortage: Critical Need in Rural Communities
By 2035, Florida is projected to face a shortfall of 37,400 registered nurses, according to the Florida Hospital Association in partnership with the Safety Net Hospital Alliance of Florida. “The nursing shortage isn’t just a number on a page—it affects real people who need care,” said Timothy E. Moore, Ph.D., president of Indian River State College. “This grant gives us the resources to recruit students from places like Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties, train them here, and help them build careers in their own communities.”
Project NURSe: Expanding Capacity and Building Partnerships
With HRSA funding, Indian River State College will expand nursing program enrollment to 475 students by fall 2026, with projected annual completions increasing to over 140 registered nurse graduates entering the healthcare workforce in rural and medically underserved areas. The grant funds dedicated staff to support this expansion, and additional nursing faculty and clinical preceptors will be recruited to maintain The River’s accreditation standards and educational excellence.
Project NURSe implements a “grow your own” workforce development model: by recruiting nursing students from the communities that need them most and providing clinical experiences in local healthcare facilities, the program increases the likelihood graduates will remain and practice as registered nurses in their communities long-term.
Project NURSe will provide comprehensive student support, including tutoring, NCLEX-RN exam preparation, and transportation stipends for clinical rotations. The initiative also includes a Dedicated Education Hospital partnership with Raulerson Hospital in Okeechobee County, where nursing students receive one-to-one preceptorship and direct pathways to employment.
About Indian River State College’s Nursing Program
Indian River State College’s School of Nursing has been preparing registered nurses for the Treasure Coast region since 1965. The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program combines rigorous classroom instruction with extensive clinical experience in acute care, long-term care, and community health settings.
The program earned continuing accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) in 2022 with no areas needing development and two noted program strengths. Indian River State College nursing graduates consistently achieve program completion rates above the national average for ACEN-accredited programs—and go on to pass the NCLEX-RN licensure exam at rates that exceed state and national benchmarks. The Florida Board of Nursing has recognized the program for its excellence.
“Demand for registered nurses on the Treasure Coast is real and rising,” said Dr. Patricia Gagliano, Dean of Nursing at Indian River State College. “This HRSA grant allows us to expand our nursing program responsibly. Our graduates enter healthcare practice confident, competent, and community-focused, prepared to address the unique health challenges facing rural and underserved populations in Florida.”
Project NURSe offers two nursing education pathways: a Traditional ADN cohort with extensive clinical rotations in acute care, pediatrics, maternal/child health, mental health, and community health settings; and an Advanced Placement Bridge cohort for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Paramedics, and Registered Respiratory Therapists, offering advanced placement credit and expanded clinical experience in long-term care settings—a critical healthcare need in rural areas.
Graduates are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN licensure examination and enter high-need registered nurse roles across acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, ambulatory care, and community health settings. Many graduates continue their nursing education at Indian River State College to complete the RN-to-BSN bachelor’s degree program.
With the opening of Indian River State College’s 50,000-square-foot state-of-the-art nursing education center in 2023, The River’s School of Nursing expanded to double the number of nursing program graduates.

Clark Advanced Learning Center Hosts Information Session for Prospective Students
STUART, Fla. (Nov. 12, 2025) — Clark Advanced Learning Center, an A-rated public charter high school operated by Indian River State College, will host an information session for prospective students and families on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. at the Clark campus. The session is open to all families interested in learning more about Clark’s academic programs, admissions process, and school culture.
“We invite students and families to join us and discover what makes Clark a unique educational opportunity on the Treasure Coast,” said Leslie Judd, Principal and Executive Director of Clark Advanced Learning Center. “This is a great chance to learn about our rigorous academic programs and ask questions about the application process.”
Clark Advanced Learning Center is now accepting applications for the 2026-27 school year for students entering grades 9-12. The primary application period is open through February 28, 2026. Applications submitted after this date will be placed on a waitlist. Families can apply online at www.clarkadvancedlearningcenter.org.

Indian River State College Honors Veterans Day with Continued Commitment to Military Student Excellence
FORT PIERCE, Fla. (Nov. 7, 2025) – As the nation prepares to observe Veterans Day, Indian River State College reaffirms its dedication to serving those who have served our country. The College’s comprehensive support programs for military-connected students continue to set the standard for higher education institutions nationwide.
Indian River State College currently serves over 400 student veterans and military family members enrolled for the Fall 2025 semester, with more than 1,300 served throughout 2025. The College has earned recognition as both a Florida Collegiate Purple Star Campus and a Gold Status Military Friendly® School for 2025-2026—distinctions that honor institutions providing exceptional support to military students.
“This Veterans Day, we honor the brave men and women who have served our nation and our responsibility to serve them,” said Dr. Timothy E. Moore, Indian River State College President and Army veteran. “At Indian River State College, supporting our veterans is more than a mission—it is a commitment we uphold every day through dedicated programs, personalized resources, and a welcoming community that honors their service while helping them thrive academically.”
At the heart of this commitment is the College’s Military and Veterans Service Department. The department is housed in the Veterans Center of Excellence, a one-stop hub for veteran students from application through graduation. The Center provides comprehensive services, including admissions assistance, VA benefits certification, academic advising, and financial support.
“Success means seeing veterans make the most of their benefits and reach their goals,” said Camilo Medina, Veterans Center of Excellence Coordinator and Army veteran. “Our job is to take the stress out of the process – these students have already given so much. We want them to feel like they belong to a family here, and that’s exactly the environment we create.”
The College’s veteran students consistently demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, with over 250 maintaining GPAs of 3.5 or higher. The institution recently earned a 99.99% compliance rating from the VA, reflecting its commitment to proper administration of veterans’ education benefits.
