AVAILABLE PROGRAMS
Associate in Science Degree in Fire Science Technology
Associate’s Degree
Credits or Hours: 60
Earn your associate degree in fire science technology through our flexible program. This program is designed to work with your busy schedule while teaching you the skills and knowledge you need to advance your career.
You will learn about the science behind fire hazards and fire control, including the most effective operating procedures for fires and other emergencies.
With this degree, you’ll be prepared to work as a leader in firefighting or pursue related careers like investigator, fire protection and detection specialist, fire engineer or safety inspector.
Basic Recruit Fire Academy
Career and Technical Education Programs
Location: Treasure Coast Public Safety Complex
The Indian River State College Basic Recruit Fire Academy is certified by the Florida Bureau of Firefighter Standards and Training and serves fire service agencies throughout the Treasure Coast region.
The Fire Academy manages both:
- The Basic Recruit Fire Academy
- Advanced Fire Training Course
From the Firefighter Physical Agility Test (FPAT) through academy admission, IRSC provides the training, testing, and resources necessary to begin a firefighting career.
Admissions Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Be a high school graduate or equivalent (GED)
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Possess a valid Florida driver’s license
- Meet driving history requirements
- Be of good moral character
- Have no felony convictions, misdemeanors involving perjury, false statements, domestic violence, or crimes involving moral turpitude
- Have no affiliation with a criminal gang (as defined by FSS 874.03)
- Have been honorably discharged from the military (if applicable)
- Hold a current Florida EMT certification (EMT training is offered at IRSC)
- 2.0 minimum cumulative GPA required
- Applicants must also Successfully complete and Pass:
- Drug screening
- Fingerprinting
- Level 2 background check
- Medical and hearing examinations
- Physical ability requirements without restrictions

Firefighter Physical Agility Test (FPAT)
The FPAT is a required step for Fire Academy admission.
Upcoming Dates for the FPAT:
- Spring 2027 (CLOSED)
- Summer 2027 – January 18, 2027 @ 8 am
- Fall 2027 – April 21, 2027 @ 8 am
Applications are first-come, first-served basis.
Step 1: Register for the FPAT
Applications are available only during designated registration periods and only while seats remain available. Please refer to the Event Schedule for upcoming application dates.
Step 2: FPAT Practice and FPAT Test
Applicants selected to participate in the FPAT Practice Session and FPAT Test will receive an email containing:
- FPAT application and Medical Waiver Form via email.
Both forms must be completed and submitted by specified deadline.
Step 3: FPAT Practice Session (Mandatory) and Test
- Report to Treasure Coast Public Safety Training Complex

Applicants must report on their assigned date and time.
Step 4: Fire Academy Acceptance Process
Applicants who successfully advance in the selection process will receive a welcome email with instructions for completing the next phase of Fire Academy admission.
This process includes:
- Apply to Indian River State College
- Complete formal Fire Academy application
- COMPLIO Requirements
- Fingerprinting
- Tobacco Affidavit
- Drug Screening
- Physical Examination
- Background Check
- Motor Vehicle Driving History
- Attend Mandatory Orientation
- Complete SCBA Fitting

Live Fire Training
Live Fire Training Instructor
June 15 – 19, 2026
This 40 hour course is designed to deliver a comprehensive live fire training program, within a safe and controlled environment, in accordance with NFPA 1402, NFPA 1403, and NFPA 1500.

Live Fire Training Instructor Refresher
June 17, 2026 8AM
This 8 hour course will review incidents that have occurred, cover program updates, legislative issues, practical applications, case histories, and new technologies. The program must be completed for renewal of the Live Fire Training Instructor certification.
Must be a Certified Live Fire Instructor I to attend this class.
