The HESI A2 Admissions Assessment Exam is a computer-based test used by the Indian River State College School of Nursing to assess the academic ability of prospective nursing students. The HESI A2 exam consists of six multiple-choice sections:

Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and General Knowledge, Basic Math, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and a Learning Style Assessment.

Important Information

HESI A2 exams are only administered to students who have submitted an Indian River State College application to the Practical Nursing (PN), Bridge to RN Program, or the Associate in Science Degree in Nursing (RN) Program.
There is a fee of $110 for the program application, HESI exam, and the Proctor Fee. This fee must be paid in full at the time of application submission. No full or partial refunds are available.
HESI A2 scores will not be accepted from other schools.
Applicants must test in person.
Applicants may take the HESI A2 once per application period. (See FAQ’s for more details.)
The exam is three hours long and must be completed in one sitting.

Testing Accommodations Information

The Indian River State College Student Accessibility Services Department provides auxiliary aids, equipment, reasonable accommodations, and academic advisement to students who self-identify as having a documented disability.

Approved accommodations from other organizations (i.e. high schools or other colleges) are not transferable. Students requesting testing accommodations must obtain approval from the Indian River State College Student Accessibility Services Department before scheduling an HESI testing appointment. Please note that the processing time for accommodation requests may vary. It is important to plan ahead.

Once approval for testing accommodations is received from the Indian River State College Student Accessibility Services Department, students should contact Sarah Saenz, Assessment Specialist, at (772) 336-6242 to schedule an HESI testing appointment with accommodations.

What type of photo ID is acceptable?

A photo ID is required to test.

Current Driver’s License with Photo
Current Federal, State, County or Municipality-issued ID with photo (includes U.S. Military ID)
Current Alien Registration Card (Green Card) with photo
Current Passport with recent photo
Passport Card
Current High School ID
Current Indian River State College ID Card

If an ID has an expiration date, it is no longer valid after that date. Also, once an ID is broken into more than one piece or has been cut, it is no longer valid. An ID printed on paper, photo paper or cardboard cannot be accepted for testing. Digital IDs are not accepted.

What is the retest policy of the HESI A2?

Examinees are permitted one attempt per registration period (i.e. one attempt in the fall and one attempt in the summer). Testing attempts not in accordance with this policy will not be used for admission to the Practical Nursing or Registered Nursing programs at Indian River State College. No refund will be provided for multiple test attempts during the same registration period.

If I am applying to both the P.N. and R.N. programs, can I take the test twice per application period?

No, you are only permitted to take the HESI A2 Exam once per application period.

How long are my HESI A2 scores valid?

Applicants may take the HESI A2 once per application period. Scores may be used twice within an 18- month period. The most recent set of scores will be used for current applications. If you completed the HESI A2 exam at Indian River State College and have not yet reached its 18-month expiration, your scores will be automatically applied to your application, unless you opt to retake the exam.

Who needs to take the HESI A2 exam?

Any student wishing to be considered for the Practical Nursing or Registered Nursing programs at Indian River State College.

Is academic integrity important during testing?

Absolutely! Any student who is suspected of any form of academic dishonesty or is acting suspiciously during the HESI A2 exam will be immediately disqualified, lose their exam fee, and forfeit their opportunity to reapply for any other Indian River State College Nursing Program. Students are not permitted to have any notes or resources during the exam. They are not allowed to open any other tab(s) on their computer while testing. Cell phones, smartwatches, or any other electronic devices are strictly prohibited.

Am I allowed to use a calculator for the Math portion of the HESI A2 exam?

Yes, the HESI A2 exam has a built-in calculator that will be displayed on your screen. This calculator is the only one you are permitted to use during your HESI A2 exam. All other calculators are prohibited.

Does this test contain any experimental test questions?

Yes, the HESI A2 includes 5 experimental questions in each section; however, these questions are not scored.
