FORT PIERCE—Indian River State College (IRSC) was one of the settings from June 19-25 for the 2023 Florida Sheriff’s Explorers Association (FSEA) State Conference. The conference was hosted by St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post 400.

Florida Explorers Association

Nearly 300 Explorers from 23 law enforcement agencies across Florida trained and competed in real-world scenarios designed to test their ability to assess and respond to mock law enforcement calls for service. The scenarios were staged at IRSC’s Treasure Coast Public Safety Training Complex in Fort Pierce. Scenarios included active shooter, building searches, crime scene investigations, domestic violence, DUI investigations, felony traffic stops and officer down scenarios. Nineteen of the participants were from St. Lucie Post 400.

On June 20, the event featured an Opening Banquet Dinner. IRSC President Dr. Timothy Moore was the guest speaker.

Participants also tested their firearms skills during a firearms relay competition at the Sgt. Gary Morales Training Complex west of the city, where they also performed physical agility tests (PAT). The conference concluded June 24 with an Awards Banquet Dinner at the St. Lucie County Fairgrounds.

“Explorer programs help build future law enforcement officers through mentorship and hands-on training,” said FSEA Vice President and St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Robert Doty. “The competitions and scenario-based exercises help build the confidence they need to handle any situation.”

“The Explorers program provides participants ages 14-21 with a better understanding of the criminal justice system and prepares them for a career in law enforcement,” said St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara. “The program is a great learning experience and bridges the gap between youth and law enforcement by building positive relationships through mentorship.”
